Always ahead of the curve, fall fashion week recently wrapped up in Paris. Although i definitely prefer warm weather, nothing beats fall style from the coats to the bags to the shoes. It’s all sharper, statement making and put together. Looking at all the models strutting down the catwalks of Paris, there were three standout designers for me; Chanel, Prada, and Giambattista Valli.
Chanel’s fall collection was inspired by Shanghai and featured completely imaginative and extremely detailed pieces which were truly works of art. Embellishments abounded with red silk shantung boots, moss green sequined bags, and jewels that looked like antique treasures from the orient. One of my fave pieces from the ready-to-wear collection was a saffron sweater minidress with dolman sleeves that has “Chanel” knitted in Mandarin characters across the chest. Each piece was really more remarkable than the next and they will all end up in some lucky gals wardrobe.
Giambattista Valli somehow made tweed, feathers and sheer look amazing together. A mod 60s touch was mixed in with cat eyes, bubble gum pink miniskirts and grosgrain bows all finished off with heavy doses of black. On the opposite end of the spectrum, GV also featured a fur turtleneck dress!
Prada went 50s all the way, finishing off one perfectly structured black a-line dress after another with knee high socks and red patent, pointy toe stilettos. Ruffled hems and necklines, sky high loafers in every color, and patent bow belts abounded. My favorite was their “ikat meets plaid” printed frocks, skirts and coats which came in neutrals, reds and greens. Prada also made a beige cashmere crewneck look chic by cinching one of their sassy belts at the wait.
Fall fashion week was eclectic if nothing else. Everything found its place including 90s minimalism, fabulous fur, opulence (brocade, embroidery, feathers, gilt) and bohemian (aka hippie). With so much to choose from the hardest part will be deciding what to buy. If you must be selective, bags, shoes and updated classics are the best places to put your money.

There really isn’t anything about Burberry that i don’t like. They have fabulous outerwear, amazing accessories, and sexy, comfortable shoes. I should have known that house creative director, Christopher Bailey, was just waiting in the wings with something new to thrill us with. Available June 21 at Nordstrom, Burberry Beauty is a new luxury cosmetics line which is sure to please. Iconic, grey plaid packaging and really flattering, wearable shades make it a must for your makeup bag. My favorite are the creamy lipsticks especially Cameo #2 which is an edgy english rose shade, perfect for fall.
If you love lipstick and Gucci, look out for Tom Ford’s Private Blend Lip Color. The collection includes 12 lipstick shades in ivory cases gilded with gold. The shades are classic with a twist like True Coral (lovely for summer) and Black Orchid (a chic, deep plum). It’s a bit pricey at $45 a pop, but lipstick is a nice pick-me-up and few things are as fabulous as pulling an uber chic tube out of your favorite bag for touch ups!

Two weeks ago i wrote about how awesome buying second hand designer items is for your wallet and the earth. Since then i’ve had an unfortunate experience with a “vintage” Louis Vuitton bag i purchased so i thought it was necessary to add a disclaimer. If you are going to buy a vintage designer item make sure you do your homework. Even the biggest fashion junkie can get burned as you’ll learn here.
Last year was really the first that i delved deep into vintage designer bags. I learned about a reputable high end vintage consignment shop in Georgetown, Washington DC. It is run by a charming and gracious German woman, Inga, who is an expert on Chanel. I purchased several Chanel items from her and a Louis Vuitton Papillon which i was told was 1970s vintage. I was a bit leery of making the purchase since LV is pretty much the most knocked off designer ever and i didn’t know that much about what to look for. But i trusted the seller and took the bag anyway. The bag ended up sitting in my closet so i decided to resell it, which is when i discovered from a LV authenticator and another extremely reputable source that the bag was a fake. Needless to say i was very angry and i called the shop where i purchased the bag right away. The shop perseveres in maintaining the authenticity of their items, but they refunded my money.
All of that has definitely taken the shine off of second-hand designer items and made me a lot more wary when making a purchase. There is something to be said for paying full price and knowing its real because even 50% off the original retail price is too much to pay for a fake. Luckily there are a few sources to purchase gently used Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci and the like which 100% guarantee the authenticity. Fashionphile.com and DesignerSocial.com have professional authenticators on staff for each item they consign and each bag is thoroughly inspected before making its way to the customer. You’ll possibly pay a little more than eBay or your local consignment store, but you can enjoy the peace of mind that comes from knowing with certainty that your bag is genuine. So shop wisely my friends!
